Kente Fabric

Ghana has recently repositioned Kente from a widely used cultural symbol into a protected and economically strategic asset by granting it Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2025. This means only handwoven cloth produced in recognised regions can legally be called Kente. Kente is not a single uniform tradition. It includes distinct lineages, most notably Asante (Ashanti) Kente and Ewe Kente, each rooted in different places, systems, and design philosophies.

Asante Kente, produced in villages such as Bonwire, Adanwomase, and Sakora Wonoo in the Ashanti Region, is closely tied to royal authority. Its patterns are structured and symbolic, often linked to hierarchy, proverbs, and status.

Ewe Kente, centred in the Volta Region in areas such as Agotime Kpetoe, Afegame, and Agbozume, is more expressive and narrative-driven. It features greater variation in structure, more figurative motifs, and historically broader social use beyond royal contexts.

This shift is being reinforced through traceability systems (such as QR codes and labelling) and efforts to restrict mass-produced imitations that have diluted value and meaning.

At the same time, Kente’s recognition as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage and its promotion through national festivals signal a deliberate elevation of its cultural and commercial status.

However, this sits alongside ongoing pressure from global fast fashion and declining local production creating a tension between protection and economic reality. Ultimately, Ghana is asserting control over ownership, authorship, and value capture, positioning Kente not just as fabric, but as a protected cultural system with distinct origins and intellectual depth.
