Tartan

Rooted in traditional Scottish weaving, particularly twill construction and the sett tartan, this pattern exemplifies how pattern structure and identity can harmoniously coexist.  It’s a system imbued with meaning through order, balance and repetition.

BAESHA is interested in observing, respecting and thoughtfully extending this system rather than replicating it.  By studying how tartan encodes identity through its structure, we can notice similar principles in other cultural textile systems. This research falls within a broader investigation into woven, printed and resist-dyed traditions and how each carries meaning differently through construction, surface or process.

In this context, tartan is not treated as a fixed heritage aesthetic, but as a working example of a rule-based design language one that continues to evolve, adapt, and inform contemporary thinking around pattern, authorship, and cultural expression.
