States of Belonging
The States of Belonging are BAESHA’s framework for understanding how objects, spaces and sensory experiences can shape feeling and response.
Each state describes a different way belonging can be felt from feeling grounded and held, to feeling restored, recognised, opened or energised.
The nine states are arranged as a journey: Root, Hold, Still, Echo, Shift, Drift, Open, Weave and Surge. Together, they help BAESHA design products and experiences with clearer emotional intention.
A candle, soap, lampshade, textile or scent may support calm, memory, movement, connection or activation. These states give language to that feeling, helping people understand not just what a product is, but what kind of atmosphere it can help create.
They are part of the wider BAESHA system: a way of connecting product, sensory design, atmosphere and human response.
Belonging can be felt and the States of Belonging help us name how.
